Kudremukh is my hometown. I was born and brought up here. I have millions of memories here. This trek is always special to me as it was my first big trek and it was with my family.
I want to talk about why the place is called Kuduremukha. In Kannada, Kudure means horse and mukha means face. The peak(1892 mts) I am writing about is shaped like the face of a horse and hence the name.
I did this trek in June 2012. Kudremukh had received couple of monsoon showers, which kept up the greenery of the place.
The peak is around 10 kms from my home. We, a group of 8 people started at 7 30 AM from home by jeep. Once we reached Balagal, we travelled in jeep for 5 kms and reached base camp Mullodi. It was almost 9 when we started our trek.
It was one of the most beautiful 11 kms I had ever taken in my life. Sound of flowing water, chirping birds still echoes in my ears. I was thrilled looking at a green snake and various insects.
After what seemed like never ending trek, we came across a place where fresh water was emerging between the rocks. stretches of greenery till the horizon, boulderous terrain.
We reached the peak around noon and had packed meals for lunch. The view from the peak was spectacular!

One will come across milestones like these throughout the path. This surely kept us motivated.

We started walking down at 4 30. We had a small campfire along our way and picked up few mangoes we found. The only source of light we had was those led lights from Nokia basic sets. But nature had its own way of helping us with a beautiful moon. Walking in that moon light masked all our tiredness.
We finally reached guide’s home at 8 45 pm.
Few takeaways:
- We learned how important it is to start trek early because it gets really tough to walk with scorching heat.
- It is advisable to carry light food as its a long journey.
