This is one of the simplest and yummiest dal and coconut chutney recipe that tastes well specially with food made with rice like Akki Rotti, Akki Mudde(Pundi Gatti), Idlies or even plain rice.

Ingredients:
Horse Gram/hurLi kaaLu- 3/4 cup
Coconut- 1 cup
Curry leaves- 1 strand
Red chillies- 5-6
Groundnut oil- 1 tsp
Tamarind- lemon sized
Rock salt/ kalluppu- as per taste
Onion- 1 small

Tempering:
Mustard seeds- 1 tsp
Red chillies- 1
Curry leaves- 3-4 leaves
Hing- 1 pinch
Groundnut Oil- 1 tsp

Method:
1) Start by frying all ingredients listed except onion and coconut in a spoon of oil. i.e., horse gram, red chillies, tamarind, curry leaves, salt. Usually tamarind and salt will be added directly into mixer. It’s just easy and won’t alter taste to fry them all together.
2) Keep frying till the horse gram turns reddish.
3) Let it cool down.
4) Once its cool, grind the fried mix with grated coconut.
5) Add the chopped onions towards the end. This is so that chunky onions in chutney tastes best and adds texture than fully mashed.
6) Finish it with an aromatic tempering.

Notes:
1) You can adjust the consistency by adding extra water to eat with food like idli and dosa.
2) You can easily replace the dal mentioned in the chutney with toor dal as well. In fact, toor dal chutney is an age old recipe made in our home regularly. We gave the original toor dal chutney a twist by trying with horse gram.
